POKOTABI / Mokumoku
もくもく
Hiroo’s Mokumoku draws diners with its charcoal-grilled rice bowl, the Mokumoku Don, and fragrant dan dan noodles spiked with sansho pepper and sesame. An accessible spot day or night, with plenty of small plates and drinks.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
A bed of rice blanketed in meats steeped in sweet-savory sauce and imbued with charcoal smoke, the signature Mokumoku Don is often the first thing that catches the eye at Hiroo’s Mokumoku. Heaped with toppings such as kalbi beef, chashu pork, and chicken, it is a substantial bowl designed to be eaten by breaking the egg and tossing in the bean sprouts. Served with salad and soup as part of a set, it packs plenty of punch without feeling overly heavy—ideal for a quick midday boost.
Alongside the rice bowls, the dan dan noodles are a major draw, offered in both souped and soupless styles. The soup version features thin noodles tossed with plenty of minced meat and sliced scallions, all brought together by mild sesame richness and balanced heat that tempts you to finish every drop of broth. The soupless variation hits immediately with the tingling numbness of sansho pepper, best enjoyed by thoroughly mixing the noodles with the sauce pooled at the bottom. In summer, seasonal noodles such as chilled dan dan noodles and refreshing hiyashi chuka make an appearance as well.
Another fixture is the mouthwatering chicken (yodare-dori), where tender steamed chicken is coated in a piquant house sauce—just as suitable as a midday set main as it is as an evening drinking plate. At night, the setting takes on the easygoing rhythm of a neighborhood Chinese eatery, with patrons sharing bite-sized pan-fried gyoza, shrimp wonton noodles, and fragrant stir-fries alongside beer or Taiwanese beer.
With counter seating alongside regular tables, the dining room comfortably accommodates solo diners dropping in for a quick bite as well as small groups of friends or coworkers. Takeout is also available for select dishes.
